ActiveCampaign vs Mailchimp (2026): which is better?

Affiliate disclosure: We compare products independently. If you buy through an affiliate link, we may earn a commission; that does not change our verdict or the prices we report. ActiveCampaign has an affiliate program, but product fit—not commission—determines the ranking below.

Our verdict

ActiveCampaign is better for a team that needs deep, multi-step automation, conditional journeys and progressively stronger reporting. Mailchimp is better for a beginner or newsletter-first business that values a free plan, familiar campaign tools and fewer decisions during setup.

At 1,000 contacts, ActiveCampaign Starter is $15/month but limits each automation to five actions. ActiveCampaign Plus is $49/month and removes that action limit. Mailchimp Essentials is $26.50/month at 1,000 contacts and caps an Automation Flow at four steps; Mailchimp Standard is $45/month and expands flows, segmentation and reporting. Mailchimp is therefore not automatically cheaper at the plan that supports a growing automation program.

All prices are USD monthly figures from official vendor pages, as of August 25, 2026. ActiveCampaign's pricing page defaults to a monthly equivalent billed annually; confirm the billing period at checkout. The benchmark uses 1,000 contacts unless stated otherwise. Taxes, regional pricing, trials, discounts, overages and add-ons can change the total.

How we compared ActiveCampaign and Mailchimp

We compared current official pricing, plan documentation, automation ceilings, user seats, monthly sends, reporting access and add-on requirements. We used a 1,000-contact buying scenario for tier-to-tier pricing, then checked ActiveCampaign's official 5,000- and 10,000-contact examples to expose scaling. The verdict was fixed before affiliate terms were reviewed. We did not conduct a timed onboarding test, so “simpler” is an editorial judgment based on the smaller workflow surface and lower automation ceiling, not a measured claim that every user completes a Mailchimp task faster.

ActiveCampaign's customer-facing pricing page calls its third tier Pro, while the Help Center plan overview calls the same tier Professional. We use Pro below and preserve the official Help Center link rather than silently treating the names as two different plans.

ActiveCampaign's official pages are not fully synchronized on the 1,000-contact Plus price. Its current Mailchimp comparison and April 2026 pricing article publish $49/month, while some other comparison pages still say $79/month. We use the newer $49 figure but flag the conflict: verify Plus in checkout before publication, and do not represent $49 as confirmed if checkout shows $79. Mailchimp Premium's $350 base includes up to 10,000 contacts; it is shown in the 1,000-contact table because selecting fewer contacts does not create a lower Premium base tier. Mailchimp overages can apply when contact or send limits are exceeded. ActiveCampaign charges $0.005 per excess email send if the account does not raise its monthly limit, and disables email sending if overage volume reaches three times the limit. How does ActiveCampaign pricing scale with list size?

ActiveCampaign plan1,000 contacts5,000 contacts10,000 contacts
Starter$15/month$79/month$149/month
Plus$49/month$145/month$189/month
Pro$79/month$205/month$375/month
Enterprise$145/month$375/month$589/month

These list-size examples come from ActiveCampaign's official contact-tier comparison. They show why the automation tier should be chosen before the list-size tier: moving from 1,000 to 10,000 contacts raises Pro from $79 to $375/month, while a team that only needs unlimited workflow actions may stay on Plus at $189/month.

Mailchimp also scales by contact tier, but its Premium plan begins with 10,000 contacts. At 1,000 contacts, the directly comparable published prices are $26.50 for Essentials and $45 for Standard. Because the current Mailchimp calculator is interactive and can apply an introductory offer for 10,000+ contacts, confirm the same contact count, billing period and post-promotion list price at checkout rather than comparing a discounted first-year number with ActiveCampaign's list price.

Which platform has deeper automation?

ActiveCampaign wins. Starter permits only five actions inside one automation, but Plus, Pro and Enterprise publish unlimited automation actions. Higher tiers progressively unlock more triggers and actions; Pro adds connected automations, campaign automation A/B testing, conditional content and predictive sending. Sources: ActiveCampaign pricing, plan overview, and automation actions by plan.

Mailchimp Essentials supports Automation Flows but caps them at four steps. Standard and Premium support up to 200 flows and the current plan comparison describes up to 200 steps per flow, multiple branching points and more templates. That is ample for many lifecycle programs; ActiveCampaign's advantage is the progression into a broader trigger/action system rather than a claim that Mailchimp cannot build multi-step journeys. Sources: Mailchimp plan comparison and Mailchimp pricing-plan definitions.

The strongest argument against ActiveCampaign is operational: unlimited actions create more room for hidden branches, conflicting updates and workflows no one owns. If the team only needs a welcome series, a lead-magnet follow-up and a monthly newsletter, Mailchimp Essentials' four steps may be a useful constraint instead of a deficiency.

Which product is easier for a small team?

Mailchimp is the safer default for a team that wants to design, schedule and report on campaigns without first mapping a lifecycle system. It has a permanent free plan, Essentials includes three seats, and Standard includes five. Its narrower Essentials flow limit reduces the number of states a beginner must reason about.

ActiveCampaign Starter and Plus include one seat each, although additional seats can be purchased. Pro includes three and Enterprise five. ActiveCampaign is worth the extra design work when a team can name the behaviors, branches and ownership rules that will drive its automations. Sources: ActiveCampaign plan overview and Mailchimp plan definitions.

The simplicity verdict is falsified if a timed pilot using the team's three real tasks—import and segment contacts, publish a campaign, and build the required journey—takes less operator time in ActiveCampaign without producing more errors. Test those tasks with the people who will run the system; feature counts cannot measure learning cost.

How do reporting capabilities differ?

ActiveCampaign Starter includes campaign reporting. Plus adds basic reporting and analytics; Pro adds advanced reporting, revenue and conversion attribution and custom event tracking; Enterprise adds custom reporting and premium reporting and analytics. Custom Reports can also be purchased for Plus and Pro and are included with Enterprise. Source: ActiveCampaign plan and add-on overview.

Mailchimp Free includes basic reporting. Standard includes Custom Reports, advanced segmentation and multivariate testing; Premium carries the broader reporting feature set into its team-and-support tier. Source: Mailchimp pricing-plan definitions.

Choose the reporting tier from a concrete question. “Which campaign got clicks?” is an entry-level need. “Which connected journey and event sequence produced a conversion?” is the kind of question that makes ActiveCampaign Pro's attribution and custom-event features relevant.

What add-ons affect the real bill?

ActiveCampaign sells SMS, Custom Reporting, Transactional Email and Enhanced CRM as add-ons. Transactional Email uses Postmark and can be added to any base Email plan; SMS requires Plus or higher; Custom Reports can be added to Plus or Pro and are included with Enterprise. Exact add-on cost is not exposed in the public plan overview, so obtain it from checkout instead of assuming it is included. Source: ActiveCampaign add-on requirements.

Mailchimp SMS is available on paid plans and starts at $20/month; credits expire at the end of each billing cycle. Mailchimp Transactional is a separate add-on for Standard or Premium and starts at $20 per block of 25,000 transactional emails. Sources: Mailchimp SMS pricing and Mailchimp Transactional pricing.

Does the affiliate program affect this verdict?

No. ActiveCampaign's program currently pays 30% of subscription revenue for the first 12 months of a referred customer's paid service, subject to approval, activity and documentation conditions. Its terms prohibit unapproved coupons, discounts, free trials and other promotional offers. Mailchimp's commission route is Mailchimp & Co, which requires actively managing at least two paid client accounts rather than merely publishing a referral link. Sources: ActiveCampaign Affiliate Partner Terms and Mailchimp & Co commissions.

There is no promo-code block because this page has no ActiveCampaign-approved public code with a verified customer benefit and expiry. Publishing a placeholder would imply an offer that has not been authorized.

Who should choose ActiveCampaign?

Choose ActiveCampaign if automation logic is a core business system: contacts must enter journeys from multiple behaviors, follow conditional paths and produce conversion or revenue reporting. Starter is suitable only when five actions per automation are enough; Plus is the first tier with unlimited actions, while Pro is the meaningful step for advanced reporting and predictive features.

Who should choose Mailchimp?

Choose Mailchimp if the team mainly sends campaigns, wants a permanent free starting point, or benefits more from three Essentials seats and a constrained flow builder than from additional automation depth. Move to Standard when custom reporting, advanced segmentation and longer branching flows are required.

FAQ

Is ActiveCampaign cheaper than Mailchimp in 2026?

At 1,000 contacts, ActiveCampaign Starter is $15/month and Mailchimp Essentials is $26.50/month. For unlimited automation actions, ActiveCampaign Plus is $49/month; Mailchimp Standard is $45/month but uses different flow limits and features.

Does ActiveCampaign have unlimited automations?

ActiveCampaign Plus, Pro and Enterprise publish unlimited automation actions. Starter limits each automation to five actions. Available triggers and action types still vary by plan, so “unlimited” does not mean identical automation capability on every tier.

How many users are included with ActiveCampaign?

Starter and Plus include one seat, Pro includes three, and Enterprise includes five. ActiveCampaign says additional seats can be purchased. Mailchimp includes three seats on Essentials, five on Standard and unlimited seats on Premium.

Is Mailchimp easier than ActiveCampaign?

Mailchimp is our simpler default for campaign-first beginners, but we did not run a universal usability benchmark. Test the team's real import, campaign and automation tasks; ActiveCampaign can be faster when its deeper automation replaces recurring manual work.

Does ActiveCampaign have a public promo code?

This page has no verified code. ActiveCampaign's affiliate terms prohibit discounts, coupons, free trials and promotional offers unless ActiveCampaign approves them in writing, so no placeholder is presented as a live offer.
